Race Report: Southern Athletics League 2022

This seasons Southern Athletics League (“SAL”) was the first competitive league since the pandemic. Covid had left a gap amongst teenage athletes coming through the age groups. The junior athlete numbers are slowly recovering. We’ve had an average of 10 juniors and 10 seniors competing in the matches. Obviously, our numbers were up for our home match in June. We struggled to get athletes out for the heat-wave match in August, but everybody who came had a brilliant time. Our team is doing incredibly well in all events we compete in, but we have to concentrate in the next season in filling all events.

Outstanding junior athletes were William Andoh (100m, 200m) and Yousif Noor (800m) and Michelvi Wamba (100m, 200m). Sadly, due to the low match points our club was relegated into Division 2. I believe we can move up a league again back to Division 1 after the next season. A very competitive group of U15 athletes will move into the U17s and therefore are eligible to compete next season, amongst them are also strong female field eventers. This should be reflected in our future results. Also, we are very excited that a throws coach has recently joined our club. This is presents a great opportunity for clubhouse athletes to try out throwing.
