Announcement: In memory of Steve Shanks

We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the sudden death of Steve Shanks on his way home after completing the London Marathon on Sunday 23 April.

Steve was a civil servant who moved to London from the Midlands in 2011 to work in operations at the London 2012 Olympics. He moved near to Poplar and joined the club soon after his move, such was his passion for running and its community.

He was an active and regular member of the club, and particularly loved cross-country and also participated in quite a few other road and trail ultras and marathons. He loved hard work and was no stranger the dedication and discipline these events demand. He also came to the Isle of Wight Fell running weekend with the club on more than a few occasions, winning SEAA medals in the process.

He was also active in the civil service athletics scene and represented the UK service at many national and international events. He was a keen parkrunner, completing nearly 300 runs in over a 100 locations. Friends say he was often one of the last to leave a party, yet would always come back the next morning to help clearing up.

Steve was an accomplished runner and was extremely humble, never one to shout about his achievements but a kind, loyal friend and member of the club. Despite moving back to the Midlands, he still wore the club vest with loyalty and dedication, and drove down to London to take part in cross-country league races.

He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with Jess, his wife and his wider family. Rest In Peace, Run In Peace.
