Race Report: Medal haul for VPH&THAC at the Isle of Wight Fell Race 2023 Champs
Ryde Harriers host the legendary annual Fell Race championships in the Isle of Wight, and clubs from far and wide across the South of England and the UK register to take on the three races hosted across two days. This consists of a double header on Saturday: 3.8km – 235m ascent in the morning, then 12km – 443m ascent in the afternoon. Then the half marathon concluding the festivities on Sunday (21km – 487m ascent) across various routes in Ventnor.
Congratulations to the small but perfectly formed squad from VPH&THAC making the pilgrimage this year, bringing back the team trophy (with Serpie’s keeping the shield warm for 2021 and 2022) that the club held for a sustained period of time since 2013 to 2019. Though the race series was not held in 2020 due to Covid, and it was only recent history when the club previously assembled a friendly horde of nearly 100 runners attending in the peak years! (…no pun intended).
This is a very friendly and informal event, open to all those that have not participated in such racing before. Let’s see if we can rekindle this grand VPH&THAC tradition for September 2024!
Kudos to our Captain emeritus Simeon Bennett who continues to participate year after year! Standout individual performance from Hazel Norton Hale who did a clean sweep of the awards, congratulations!
