Age categories

Age categories are set in accordance with the 2018 to 2020 UKA Rules for Competion.

The Competition Year is from 1st September each year to the following 31st August. The operative date for determining membership of age groups for all athletes under the age of 17 shall be the 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year (UKA rule 141 S 1).

  • Under 11 boys and girls (U11): Competitors who are aged 8, 9 or 10 on the day of competition. UK Athletics rules do not cater for athletes under the age of 11 years. This does not necessarily preclude provision by Competition Providers for events for athletes younger than 11 years, with correspondingly reduced distances to run. The minimum age for the one mile race is 8 on the basis of the maximum race distance for under 8 runners being 1 km and under 10 runners being 2 km in the Fell Running Association Requirements and Rules for Race Organisers.
  • Under 13 boys and girls (U13): Competitors who are aged 11 on the day of competition, or 12 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year as defined above. UKA rule 141 S 3(1)(i).
  • Under 15 boys and girls (U15): Competitors who are aged 13 or 14 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year as defined above. UKA rule 141 S 3(1)(ii).
  • Under 17 men and women (U17): Competitors who are aged 15 or 16 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year as defined above. UKA rule 141 S 3(1)(iii).
  • Under 20 men and women (U20): Competitors who are aged 17, 18 or 19 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year as defined above. UKA rule 141 S 3(1)(iv).
  • Seniors: Competitors who are aged at least 20 years on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year as defined above. In Road Relay competitions Under 20 men and women, as appropriate, may compete in Senior events. UKA rule 141 S 3(1)(v).
  • Veteran 40 men and women (V40): Competitors who are at least 40 years of age and no more than 49 on the day of competition.
  • Veteran 50 men and women (V50): Competitors who are at least 50 years of age and no more than 59 on the day of competition.
  • Veteran 60 men and women (V60): Competitors who are at least 60 years of age on the day of competition.
